MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
New York Yankees had come back. 2004 AL East Champion claimed to top of the AL wild card standing and approached to AL East first place, Boston, to 0.5 games behind on 20 July. I watched the four-game series of NY against Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on NHK BS1 on 21-24 July.
Through the series, AL West leader Angels made big-innings and aimed to protect the leads by relief pitchers. Especially Scot Shields claimed the hill to cancell out Yankees turnaround in winning-games before closer Francisco Rodriguez ended the game with win.
Yankees have only two starters, Randy Johnson and Mike Mussina, on active to have kept the rotation from start of season. In addition, there're not another pinstripe reliever to shorten the burden of reliever Tom Gordon and closer Mariano Rivera. Anyway it may be time for Yankees fans to bear pitching problems and to wait for starters in disabled list.
Bronx Bobmers lost 3 games of the series to drop the third place behind 0.5 games from top, Minnesota Twins and Oakland Athletics( ! ) in AL wild card standing.
Hideki Matsui collected 4 hits of 16 at-bats with 2 HRs and 4 RBIs to enter all of series for Yankees.
