BENFICA GOES THROUGH AS UNITED LEAVES OUT EURO
Dead or Alive. Entering the game as the 3rd and 4th team, it was just a win for Manchester United and Benfica Lisbon to want for at Estadio da Luz, Lisbon, in the final match of UEFA Champions League Group D.
It was the 3rd team from England to score opener. Right-back Gary Neville found free Paul Scholes in the box and the Englishman made a poor ball-touch but carried the ball with his own body before Portugal team goalkeeper Quim reached it. United seemed to take an initiative of the game. But the away-team couldn't have such a situation to add goals. It was a reason that Benfica's defence worked well to stop United's attacks from the central field, in which Sir Alex Ferguson's men were deprived a ball before they moved it toward a sideline. Another reason was two international strikers, Wayne Rooney and Ruud van Nistelrooy, who moved around the field too excessively to carry a ball to the shot range at last.
Home team's thunderous attack made a success when Brazilian Geovanni dived for a cross from the right to tie the game. But that wasn't enough for Ronald Koeman's team to quarify Final 16. And time came for Portuguese supporters to roar with the excitement. Brazilian Beto shooted directly from the middle range for Lisbon past away goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar after Manchester deffence cleared out a cross.
United always almost had the ball of the possesion during the 2nd half, but Benfica disallowed a chance to score before a referee called time up. Lisbon's dream for King keeps going on. Manchester's Euro campaign ends.
