FIGHTERS WIN TO FINISH 1st

BASEBALL

Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters earned a come-from-behind win over third placed Fukuoka Softbank Hawks in the Fighters' final game of regular season. The victory meant Nippon-Ham's finished the first place in the Pacific League and would face the winner between Hawks and Seibu Lions in playoffs of the second stage.

Fighters coach Trey Hillman employed all the usable players in the team to want one victory.  He switched Yu Darvish from starter Masaru Takeda, who had six hits and one run with three strikeouts in five innings. Darvish, who is first relief this season, pitched strongly to rellay the winning formula, Hisashi Takeda and closer Micheal Nakamura.

In a while, Softbank, who had been confirmed the third place before the game, was usual in style when starter Tsuyoshi Wada did his job to have seven hits and four runs with five strikeouts in 96 throws and seven innings. The lefty was fired two solo shots by Kensuke Tanaka and Fernando Seguignol in fourth inning and gave two straight RBI doubles by Jose Macias and Makoto Kaneko in seventh after Takeshi Tsuji hit an RBI single for Hawks to take a lead in third.

Fighters seemed to be an one-for-all team. Matching power of all the players, I expect Fighters to go for it with the Dosanko fans' dream.

match result:

Softbank 1-4 Nippon-Ham (27 Sep)
W:M.Takeda(5-2)
S:MICHEAL(39)
L:Wada(14-6)
*1st Place Nippon-Ham Entering Playoffs from 2nd Stage
*Hawks on 3rd Place Meeting Lions in Playoffs 1st Stage

WASHINGTON'S WINNER PLACES SHIMIZU OUTSIDE THE TITLE

J-LEAGUE

Brazilian Washington returned from the injury and made little of scoring chances to give Urawa Reds a 1-0 victory over Shimizu S-pulse but the striker left the pitch of Saitama Stadium midway through the game due to the left thigh injury into second half. Shimizu lost two games in a row against top teams of J-League. This seemingly let them fall off a fight for the title.

Washington, his existence was huge enough to contribute Urawa's dominating the game. It was so quick to move the game as the Brazilian well controlled an Alex Santos' cross from the left to put it easily into the net, his 17th goal this season. Since that, both teams had failed a few times to score each other. Urawa, who allowed only three goals in 11 home-games this season, denied young Shimizu's challenges to end the game.

It's questionable how bad Washington is but Reds are unforgiven to take a breath until the final match of the league with defending champion Gamba Osaka.

match result:

Shimizu 0-1 Urawa (23 Sep)
16' WASHINGTON

13th Day: YOKOZUNA SHOWS HIS STRENGTH TO BEAT AMA

SUMO

He found the goal of the tournament on the second Friday of Aki-Basho when Yokozuna Asashoryu outplayed Maegashira Ama to keep the best result of one-loss. If tommorow the top-ranked Mongolian will earn the 13th victory from Ozeki Chiyotaikai or he will hear Ama's 4th loss, the Emperor's Cup is waiting for Asasyoryu.

I knew the Yokozuna had been strong again. This tournament seems to have been over...

9th Day: MONGOLIANS STAY AS RUSSIAN BACKS

SUMO

2 Mongolian rikishies were left on the top result of one-loss on the 9th day of September Grand Sumo Tournament. Maegashira Roho steped backward when the Russian was defeated by Yokozuna Asashoryu. In a while, Maegashira Ama got out Maegashira Baruto by a rare finish, Fumidashi.

Next Day, the Mongolian Yokozuna faces Sekiwake Kotomitsuki. And Ama meets Homasho but the 22-year-old Mongolian has difficult ties with top-ranked wrestler yet, which includes the Yokozuna if he kept the result.

Hang in there, Ama!

A DISAPPOINTING GAME at NATIONAL STADIUM

J-LEAGUE

Why this game was played at National Stadium of Tokyo? It was a home-game for Shimizu S-Pulse. I feel sorry for the home-team supporters because they're robbed of the important match that should be performed in a hometown by J-League. Sorry Shimizu...

Kashima Antlers, whose midfielder Mitsuo Ogasawara left the team to depart to Italian club Messina last month, beat Shimizu on the 24th day of J-League. But both teams performances were far from my satisfaction. In spite of Kashima's consciousness to some side-attack, I was not able to take in what both players thought from almost all plays. Goals of the game were accidental as all were produced by deffensive miscues.

This is also a ploblem for Japan's national team but Japanease player, especially youngmen are lack of physical. Furthermore, they seemed to avoid one-on-one situation to pass the other under the name of "ball possession". Show me more agressiveness, youngmen!!

match result:

Kashima 2-1 Shimizu (16 Sep)*
(1-0)44' FERNANDO
(2-0)60' NOZAWA

NAKAMURA MUST BE THE DIFFERENCE BUT FALLS INTO LOSER

EUROPEAN FOOTBALL

Shunsuke Nakamura and Celtic FC, who leads the Scotish Premier League after playing six games this season, stood at Old Trafford in the first group stage match of UEFA Champions League. Manchester United, who is now on the top of the four played English Premiership table, declared to have the right of Euro Champ when the Reds earned a 3-2 win with Louis Saha's double and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's third goal. But the Celtic had threatened the United enough.

Yan Vennegoor of Hesselink, new comer Dutchman recieved from GK Artur Boruc's punt past Reds defender Rio Ferdinand and fired opennig goal past countryman Edwin Van der Sar. Minutes later Boruc touched Ryan Giggs in the box and was called penalty before Saha made it for the United. Gradually the English team controlled the field when Paul Scholes fed Saha to lead the game. Thomas Gravesen worked hard as new hearts of Scots team but no one supplemented his part in the Dane's losing the ball. Saha's second and Solskjaer's winner both was produced by such a situation. But Nakamura save the Celtic when the Japanese curled over the wall on the edge of the United box. Van der Sar just looked the equalizer into the net. The game went to rally to end the half.

After the Norwegian's goal in the start of the second, Vennegoor, Gravesen and Nakamura were fighting cooly with superbly organized United but the Celtic had little chance to level until the end of the game. I wish that the Scotish team survives the group stage as long as possible and go through it. Good Luck, Nakamura and the Celtic!

FIGHTERS EDGE OUT LIONS TO AIM FOR 1st PLACE

BASEBALL

The bullpen saved the game when Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters deserved a 6-5 victory over Pacific League leading Seibu Lions at Sapporo Dome. Both starters were blown out and were got out the game earlly inning.

Fighters' rookie Tomoya Yagi allowed three runs by three hits in a row in the top of the 1st and gave Lions' slugger Kazuhiro Wada the second RBI this night in the 3rd right before Ham's coach Trey Hillman sent out Takehiko Oshimoto, who kept the game with no runs earned and a winner of the game. In a while, Chris Gissell's pitching was far from Lions coach Tsutomu Ito's expectation as the American resulted five runs earned to be struck four consecutive hits including Atsunori Inaba's three-run homer, his 25th this season, in the bottom of the 1st. After Tsuyoshi Shinjo's sac fly in 3rd, the right-hander handed Hsu Ming-Chieh, who gave the home team the 6th run by Fernando Seguignol's sac fly in 4th.

Fighters' bullpen worked well despite Lions' pinch-hitter Akira Eto's RBI single to cut the deficit at 1 while Seibu's relievers accomplished shut-out relay after the Taiwanese. Micheal Nakamura extended club's save record, 36th, to end the game. Play-off births of Pa. League had been booked by Fighters, Lions and Softbank Hawks, who stand the 2nd place by 1/2 game with Nippon-Ham together, but now I don't know where the first place winner goes.

match result:

Seibu 5-6 Nippon-Ham (12 Sep)

BROTHER DUEL GOES TO COLTS WINNER

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE

It was the first day of NFL 06/07 and the first game in NFL history that both team's quarterback are brother. Peyton Manning of Indianapolis Colts was welcomed Eli Manning of New York Giants. A key player of the game was neither quarterback but a kicker. Adam Vinatieri, who joined Colts from AFL North topteam New England Patriots, was made the 4th field goal this night to give the new team a 26-21 victory.

30 year-old Peyton almost passed Colts' recievers to go deep into the red zone but Giants deffence worked firmly near the goalline to force the opponent to take field goal attempt. 5 year-old younger Eli took well-balanced option to give the Giants long gains in both rushig and passing a few times but New York kicker Jay Feely missed a 40 yard field goal attempt and that was what both teams had been devided.

Afterwards, two brothers made a touchdown pass to show the things the football fans at Giants Stadium wanted before ending the half with a Indy's 16-7 lead and no punts. Into the second half New York deffence was still alive to bring home one interception and two punts despite one touchdown and ending field goal. Their miscues were in offence. An RB's fumble after turnover by Interception in 3Q and a QB's interception after a reciever's penalty in 4Q, which seemed much controversially, might prevent Giants from coming from behind.

Colts and Giants, Peyton and Eli, they will surely give us exciting plays until the 41st Super Bowl in Miami.

match result:

TYPHOON FROM NORTH HITS THE DOME TO ROB 10th WIN OF SOFTBANK

BASEBALL

September is typhoon's season in Japan. There is the Japanese, "Taifu-no-me" or eye of typhoon, which means that power and the person who is at the center of excited things and affects people surround them. Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters, the third place of the Pacific League, is such a team. Fighters beat Fukuoka Softbank Hawks at Fukuoka Yahoo! Dome Thursday night as Typhoon born at Northland closed the Fukuoka's team at half game with earning 10th win in their 20 meetings.

In the last game of this series, Nippon-Ham's starter Masaru Takeda showed strong pitchings to allow four hits including just a solo homerun by Julio Zuleta with six strikeouts over six innings when Trey Hillman's batmen brought Takeda two runs to force bullpen works for Softbank who entered six relievers other than closer Takahiro Mahara and ace Kazumi Saito this night. Hisashi Takeda scilenced Koji Moriwaki's batmen with four strikeouts of five he faced to end the eighth. Kensuke Tanaka and Michihiro Ogasawara's RBI singles made a 4-1 lead before Micheal Nakamura saved Hideki Okajima allowing one run to end the game.

Softbank might go into the playoffs that more difficult opponent than Seibu Lions waits if Hawks had confirmed the second place. Trailing two games of difference with Lions, it may be the best result for the Hawks to stand the top of table.

match result:

Nippon-Ham 4-2 Softbank (7 Sep)
W:M.Takeda(4-1)
S:MICHEAL(33)
L:Yoshitake(3-2)
