NL TITLE GOES TO CARDS IN 7th GAME

MLB PLAYOFFS

Yadier Molina's two-run homer in the ninth set the place where the National League title went to when St. Louis Cardinals edged out New York Mets in last game of best-of-seven NLCS, MLB. Cards are going to meet AL champ Detroit Tigers to look for the first World champion since a 1982 team.

It was exciting series. Into the postseason, St. Louis lost Jason Marquis of 14-win starter and Jason Isringhausen of 33-save closer while New York was lack of Orlando Hernandez(11 wins) and Pedro Martinez(9 wins) of both starters. However both team's pitchers including the bullupens had limited the cleanups each other during the series. For example, Juan Encarnacion had .182 avg with 2 RBIs and no HR for Cards as David Wright was .160 with just a homer for Mets this series. Meanwhile the extra-players had appeared more in the Redbirds. So Taguchi's pinchhit homer in game 2, Preston Wilson's winning RBI in game 5 and Molina's game 7. It might be difference between two teams.

Tigers next facing Cards have a force to keep seven consecutive wins after a loss to Yankees in game 1 of ALDS, and resemble Red Sox meeting two years ago when Cards allowed Boston's four game sweep with eight straight postseason victories. More needful Game 1 win will be St. Louis. Make me amaze once more!

BROADCASTING MATSUI FOR MATSUI

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL

Japan Broadcasting Corporation, or Nippon Hoso Kyokai, decided to change the MLB programs led by Hideki Matsui after the Yankees slugger had gotten injured in the left wrist. It's very sorry for him not to be able to see to play this season at worst, but very happy for NHK to give us the other Japanese MLB players' games entering Takashi Saito of LA Dodgers, So Taguchi of St. Louis Cardinals, Akinori Otsuka of Texas Rangers and Kazuo Matsui of NY Mets. Especially LITTLE Matsui, compared to Godzilla Matsui of Yanks, and the Mets are expected to lead the National League East, so the Mets meeting a top team Cardinals was watched is the gladdest.

In the last game of three game series, both Matsui and Taguchi went out there as a pinch hitter but couldn't hit a single neither. Taguchi stayed there as leftfielder after that, while Matsui was replaced by relief pitcher Darren Oliver. Matsui, however, was a rest day this afternoon, and seems to enter it usually as the 7th or 8th order at bat except the 2nd in case of catcher Paul Lo Duca's absence.

In the subway series against city rival Yankees, Matsui entered all of three game series to hit 2-of-11 singles, one of which was an RBI single to tie the game, 6-6, in the series opener. In addition, he made totally four double-plays with SS Jose Reyes and 1B Carlos Delgado together. He is currently evaluated as a good second baseman, I thought. This is the last year of the three-year contract for him. I expect Matsui and the Mets more rising, and expect to continue more broadcasting it.

NEW PITCHING RELAY FOR WIN

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL

It is three-game rematch of ALDS last season. Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim welcomed New York Yankees as the home opener 2006 season on 7 April. All three games, starting pitcher each had decided the way the game flowed and relief pitcher each had perfectly relayed to the next one in order to win the game.

Angel closer Francisco Rodriguez went out in 9th after J. C. Romero and Scot Shields held the opening game of the series. They all allowed no singles in three innings to win the game, 4-1. The 2nd game, K-Rod stood again in 9th, relayed Romero and Shields. But Japanease Yankee Hideki Matsui, who was the last batter in last ALDS Game 5 against Rodriguez, hit his straight ball to carry the right sheet, forced the gap close, 3-2. After that, K-Rod retired follwing batters by breaking balls to save the game.

Yankees exploded to collect double-digit hits in the 3rd game, sending off Angels starter Bartolo Colon midway through the 3rd before winning relievers helped starter Mike Mussina last three innings. Yankee closer Mariano Rivera closed the game with no save marking, 10-1, taking over to Kyle Farnsworth and Scott Proctor with no hits allowed.

Angels and Yankees, both teams have showed the strength of relievers, so the performance of starters will make the team influence.

DIFFICULTY TO SCORE

MLB PLAYOFFS

A Very Tough Series. All of winnig starters completed each game to give Chicago White Sox a ticket to World Series first since a 1959 team. The starters, Mark Buehrle, Jon Garland, Freddy Garcia and Jose Contreras overcame battles with Angels starters limiting less than 3 runs in the American League Championship Series. Considering Anaheim's bullpen works, I felt that only little things might have turned each victory to Halos.

There were controversial judges through the series but that's a baseball. South Siders showed best pitching performance to bring a game to a scramble for one-run. That's how Chicago had won this season, Small Baseball.

ALDS hero Tadahito Iguchi became silent to make 3 hits of 17 at-bats with 6 strikeouts and a walk. I wish Sox battings take the team to World Champion.

TOTAL EFFORTS WIN TO ANGELS

MLB PLAYOFFS

Hideki Matsui hit a ground ball Angels closer Francisco Rodriguez threw to first-baseman Darin Erstad to end the 9th when Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim got the series 3-2 win over New York Yankees in the American League Division Series.

It was tense game each in the series, through which some starting pitchers allowed runs to be replaced early before late rally decided a winner. Finally, the series-winner had total efforts both pitchings and battings with just luck a little bid.

Matsui entered as 5th batting and leftfielder to get 4 hits of 20 at-bats with an RBI and a HR but 3 strikeouts and 14 left-of-bases through the series. He was in bad condition to have no hit last two games. Godzilla seemed to be fatigue due to all-162-game entrances. I strongly hope to remain in the team next season.

YANKEES REACH TO AL EAST TITLE

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL

Time to bear and wait was over. New York Yankees won the 2nd of three game series against Boston Red Sox, 8-4, on 1st October when NY got an 8th consecutive AL East title.

It was easy for me to imagine that a road to a title was difficult for Yankees when I found that New York started season opener against last World Champ Boston. As I expected, Joe Toree's men had run after Terry Francona's side through the season, by nine games as maximum.

Unbelievable for Yankees. I would like to watch it including Hideki Matsui's roared fire more one month.

New York 3-5 Boston (30 Sep)

K by K

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL

Big Unit versus Knuckleballer. Batters of both teams had stood in the situation where it became difficult for them even to hit a single. Jason Giambi's long ball helped New York to take over Boston, 1-0, in the series final at Yankee Studium.

Giambi's flyball in the bottom of the 1st went up to right near the poll and droped down the Main Box crowd. Watching TV, I didn't know where his ball passed, but umpire called it Home Run ! The first hit gotten from Red Sox starter Tim Wakefield had become a run. That was big for Bronx Bombers. New England's knuckleballer made a good performance to allow three hits with 12 strike-outs during 8 innings.

On the other hand, Yankees starter Randy Johnson was also good to limit only a single by Kevin Youkilis with 8 strike-outs during 7 innings. Big Unit's fastball is still alive.

Yankees' dream is not over yet to have shorten the game differences between both teams to 3 games. Hideki Matsui entered the game as the 5th batting and leftfielder to get no hit and no RBI.

match result:

Boston 0-1 New York (11 Sep)
W:Johnson(14-8)
S:Rivera(37)
L:Wakefield(15-11)

ALL YOU CAN DO IS TO BEAR AND WAIT

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL

New York Yankees had come back. 2004 AL East Champion claimed to top of the AL wild card standing and approached to AL East first place, Boston, to 0.5 games behind on 20 July. I watched the four-game series of NY against Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on NHK BS1 on 21-24 July.

Through the series, AL West leader Angels made big-innings and aimed to protect the leads by relief pitchers. Especially Scot Shields claimed the hill to cancell out Yankees turnaround in winning-games before closer Francisco Rodriguez ended the game with win.

Yankees have only two starters, Randy Johnson and Mike Mussina, on active to have kept the rotation from start of season. In addition, there're not another pinstripe reliever to shorten the burden of reliever Tom Gordon and closer Mariano Rivera. Anyway it may be time for Yankees fans to bear pitching problems and to wait for starters in disabled list.

Bronx Bobmers lost 3 games of the series to drop the third place behind 0.5 games from top, Minnesota Twins and Oakland Athletics( ! ) in AL wild card standing.

Hideki Matsui collected 4 hits of 16 at-bats with 2 HRs and 4 RBIs to enter all of series for Yankees.

PITCHING DUELS

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL

The channel of NHK BS1 broadcast the MLB games which were the three of the four-game series of Chicago White Sox at Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on 23-25 May (local time). To be impressive for me, pitchers of both teams had been making good performances.

The 1st day, rookie pitcher Ervin Santana finished the first victory by the shut-out game for Anaheim, in which Tadahito Iguchi had two of five hits Santana allowed. For me, this may be the first time to see Iguchi play. He is former Fukuoka Daie Hawks player whom I have no chance to see around the place I live in. It'll be one of the reasons that I'm not interested in Fukuoka's team. That's why I'm not a Iguchi's fan.

The 2nd day, Mark Beuhrle and Bartolo Colon, both pitcher allowed one run each to end the 9th inning. In the middle of the extra-inning, the VHS tape I recorded on was ended, because I had failed to set the end recording time. It was needless to say that Iguchi's game-winning double could't be seen at all.

The 3rd day, Freddy Garcia limited two runs to hand in the two-run lead to reliever Damaso Marte. Closer Dustin Hermanson to relieve Marte threw the first ball, as my tape stoped to record the game. Oh my...

Anaheim, which I've been to by homestay 10 years ago when Hideo Nomo joined the LA Dodgers first time, has disabled lists of Vladimir Guerrero and Francisco Rodriguez, but the 4th day, beat White Sox to tie the series. Now Anaheim Angels(27-20) is American league west-division co-leader with Texas Rangers, and Chicago White Sox(33-15) leads Minnesota Twins by 5 games in American league central-division.

match results:

Chicago 0-4 Anaheim (23 May)
